| Steam trains - not just
for the enthusiast, but for the entire family. Originally
built to bring the fruit (predominantly apples) from the Langkloof
Valley to the docks at Port Elizabeth, this railway now carries
mixed freight on diesel trains, and carries visitors on its steam
trains. |
 |
|
 |
This is a railway of superlatives, for it is the longest narrow
gauge railway in the world (283 kms) and it crosses the highest narrow
gauge bridge at Van Stadens(72 Mts.). Of a slightly more
specialised interest, the marshalling yard at Assegai is also the
largest. |
|
| The train is based at Humewood station in Port Elizabeth, and
much rolling stock can be seen (at no cost), as well as several engines,
of which only a few a running. |
 |
|
 |
With rationalisation, Spoornet - the national rail company -
decided that the line was uneconomic, and it would be closed.
Public support saved the train, with Spoornet continuing to run diesel
freight trains - especially quarried materials - and the Apple Express
Society taking over responsibility for running the steam trains on a
voluntary basis. |
|
| Although long journeys can be arranged, the Society regularly
runs day trips, which include crossing van Stadens Bridge and a meal at
the turning point. Frequency depends upon the time of year.
Each year "The Great Train Race" is held where teams of runners,
professional and very amateur, race the train to Loerie. This is
probably one of the world's most fun races, with honours being about
even. |
