Port Elizabeth - World Mohair Capital

For many years now, South Africa has been the biggest producer of Mohair, with most of it being grown in the semi-desert Karroo region.  The auctions of the fibre are in Port Elizabeth, which also handles most of the Lesotho clip.  Primary processing is done in Uitenhage, and more recently spinning has been done both in Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth.  These developments have allowed finished goods producers, like Momento's of Africa and its BabyMo range to prosper.

Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage form part of the new conurbation Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality, or Madiba Bay. Today over 60% of the world's mohair passes through the city in one form or another.

This will appear on signage and municipal letterheads.

With this in mind, Momento's, in conjunction with Mohair SA, approached the council and had the city officially declared the Mohair Capital of the World.

On the occasion of making the presentation to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality, Momento's of Africa organised models to show the councillors some mohair products.

Pictured here outside the Town Hall are, left to right,  Momento's Roger Smith, model Nomsabenzi Tsotsobe, and Mohair SA's Frans Loots. Nomsabenzi is, surprisingly, the Captain of the South African Ladies Rugby Team!
