| We are regularly asked about our name, and were even accused by one irate American correspondent of "crucifying the English language". There is a story behind. In the first place the name was suggested by a non-English first language speaker, and when written, was an incorrect spelling of mementoes, and for our American critic the word does have an alternative e before the s. On consideration it was decided to go with this strange spelling, with the intention of having a unique word (rather like Kodak). It has been surprising when checking the Internet just how many momentos are listed - not, we are sure, on purpose. Our explanation is that it is an amalgamation of African Moments, and Mementoes. We can thus explain the apostrophe as indicating the missing e. But the real reason is that it's different, and we wanted people to ask about it. And it works. |
