oldpea.jpg (32723 bytes) Lin Smith and her associates were asked in 1994 to take over  recently vacated bank premises in Port Elizabeth Airport.  She was given the first 2 months for free to test the project - a state which unfortunately no longer exists.  There was considerable doubt on all sides as to viability!

The shop served as the outlet for (initially) tapestries, the office (behind the counter) and the manufacturing.  Dyeing and wet processing were done at Lin's' home in the bathroom!  The weaving was moved by '96, but the office function remained until 1998

By 1996 the shop, which by now had developed into a full scale curio shop as well as general items that a small airport needed, was rated as the best in SA by International Press.  The amount of goods stocked as well a "selling space" were maximised, although one tapestry weaving loom was retained for interest.

The positioning of the shop, between separately entered Arrivals and Departures had never been ideal, the success of Momento's thus being despite - not because of situation.

In 2003, after several false starts the re-furbishing of Port Elizabeth Airport began, and one of the first "casualties" was the Momento's shop.  The business went into temporary premises in Departures, with a brand new shop opening in 2004, thus closing an important chapter in the Momento's story
